Chair and Board Members sought for Building a Safer Future Charter

The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), which was appointed earlier this year to develop and manage the Building a Safer Future (BSF) Charter, is now recruiting for a Chair and Board Members for the BSF Charter.

The BSF Charter has been created to help build public trust and raise standards in the industry by promoting an urgent and positive culture change in the safety of the built environment. It is a direct response to Dame Judith Hackitt’s Building a Safer Future Review set up in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. The Charter is about putting people’s safety first in how we plan for, design, build, maintain, and look after the safety of the buildings we live, work, or play in and protect those that use them. The Charter is seeking to learn from and adapt the experience of the ‘Responsible Care’ programme in the Chemical industry. The Charter will introduce a robust benchmarking and verification process. Additionally, the Charter will establish a public liaison portal to engage residents and the public as well as workers.

The BSF Charter was originally conceived and created by a group of 'Early Adopters' comprising local authorities, contractors, housing associations and property developers, with the support of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). The CCS has established a new, not-for-profit, legal entity to lead and develop the Charter.

The CCS would like to hear from candidates from both within, as well as outside of the construction sector, where major safety management responsibilities apply.

Candidates will need to demonstrate high-level skills and professional experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Assessment, benchmarking, and verification
  • Major safety management
  • Public and resident engagement
  • Cultural and/or behavioural change
  • Digital Development
  • Communications
  • Finance
  • Legal

Application details are available here.

The application deadline is 13 July 2020, 12 noon.
